There is certainly nothing cookie-cutter about Silver Lake— it’s as diverse as the people living in it. Silver Lake is home to many artists, writers and musicians, like Beck and the late Elliot Smith, just to name a few.
Thanks to its neighborhood feel, Silver Lake is the perfect area for young people looking for an eclectic spot, diverse families seeking out good schools (the Ivanhoe school district is coveted – and, might I mention, also helps drive up home prices) and a community vibe, and gay couples who were some of the first to gentrify the area.
Silver Lake is continually growing — with an ever-increasing mix of stylish boutiques, restaurants, bars, coffee shops and everything in-between. But it’s managed to hold on to its unique charm. Home to the famous Silverlake dog park (with separate areas for small/shy and big/not shy dogs), and the newly opened “reservoir park”.
Buyers love Silverlake – and are often surprised to discover how pricey it can be – generally home prices in the 90039 zip start high $500k’s. good news for homeowners is that Silverlake prices are continuing to rise, and it’s now a commonplace to see Silverlake homes top the $1 million mark.
If your first choice is Silverlake, but you’re feeling like it’s a bit more than you want/are able to spend, it my be worth considering some other “sister” areas – Echo Park, Atwater, and Eagle Rock tend to lower home prices, while maintaining some of the Silverlake vibe. Consider searching 90026, rather than 90039, which tends to be a more affordable option for first time buyers.
Feeling hungry in Silverlake – Hard Times Pizza is one of my favorites, and MJ’s on a friday night can be a blast if you’re feeling like you need some fantastic queens, and a bit more Janet (Jackson) in your life.
